Kaku-uchi is a liquor store and drinking establishment or bar, combined into one venue or location. Kaku-uchi are often called “Standing Bars”, and usually do not have any seating. There are standing bars all over Tokyo that are not bottle shops or liquor stores, but we are focusing on the ones that combine both. These liquor stores or bottle shops serve drinks straight from their large coolers in a walk-in serve-yourself style. During the day time, they operate as liquor stores or traditional bottle shops, most of them delivering to restaurants around their neighborhood.

At night time, usually after 5:00 pm they open up and allow people to drink whatever they have purchased in the store, or outside the store on standing tables. They get around some of the regulations of operating a bar in Tokyo by not having seating and by being self-serve. Having no tables means no By self-serve we mean you walk to the fridge, shelf, or cooler, and pick your drink and take it to the counter and pay for it. If it needs to be opened they will do it for you, and you can stand and drink in the store. Kaku-uchi bars/stores are cheap, fun and most will also serve canned foods and various kinds of assorted snacks to go along with your refreshments. Here is a list of Kaku-uchi Standing Bars in Tokyo
